Honed stone

What is a honed finish, and when is it better than polished?

A honed finish is ground smooth but stops short of a shine, leaving the stone matt. It grips better than polished and hides fine scratches and etch marks, which suits bathrooms, kitchens, busy homes and homes with elders or children. Colours look a little softer. On light stone, honed shows oil marks more readily, so seal it.

Slip and wearMore grip than polished, especially when wet. Hides fine scratches and etching, so marble stays looking even for longer.

Stones that can take a honed finish

Questions about the honed finish

Is honed marble harder to clean?

Slightly. The matt surface holds oil and dirt a little more than polished, so seal it and wipe spills promptly.

Can a polished floor be honed later?

Yes. A polished floor can be honed on site, and a honed floor can be polished.
