Polished stone

What is a polished finish, and where should I use it?

A polished finish is ground and buffed until the stone reflects light. It shows colour and veining at their strongest and is easy to wipe clean. Use it on living-room floors, walls, vanities and granite counters. Avoid it where the floor gets wet, such as entrances, bathrooms and anything outdoors, because it becomes slippery.

The polished finish at a glance

What it isThe stone is ground with progressively finer abrasives and then buffed to a mirror shine. No coating is added; the shine is the stone itself.
How it looks and feelsGlossy and reflective, with the deepest colour and sharpest veining. Smooth and cool to the touch.
Slip and wearSlippery when wet. On marble, scratches and etch marks show clearly on a polished surface. Granite holds a polish for many years.
How to look after itWipe spills quickly, clean with a neutral cleaner and use door mats to keep grit off. Marble floors can be re-polished on site when they dull.

Questions about the polished finish

Is polished marble slippery?

When wet, yes. Use it in dry rooms and choose honed or textured finishes for bathrooms, entrances and outdoors.

Does a polished floor need wax?

No. The shine comes from the stone. Wax builds up and dulls it; a neutral cleaner is enough.
