Rough and flamed stone

What is a flamed or rough finish, and where is it used?

A flamed finish is made by passing a high-temperature flame over granite so the surface crystals burst, leaving a rough, non-slip texture. Rough finishes on Kota and Tandur do the same job. Use them on driveways, car porches, ramps, pool decks and outdoor steps. Colours look lighter and less contrasted than polished.

Questions about the rough and flamed finish

Can marble be flamed?

No. Flaming suits granite. Marble and limestone are given textured finishes in other ways.

Is a flamed floor hard to clean?

It holds dirt more than a smooth floor. Sweep often and wash with a stiff brush.
