What is Kota stone?
Kota stone is a fine-grained limestone quarried around Kota in Rajasthan. It comes mainly in blue-green-grey and brown. It is hard, dense and cool underfoot, and has been laid in Indian homes, offices and public buildings for decades. It is chosen for durability and cost, not for decoration.

Guide
Kota stone: what to know before you buy
What Kota stone is
Kota stone is a fine-grained limestone from the Kota district of Rajasthan. It splits naturally into flat layers, which makes it easy to cut into slabs and tiles of even thickness. It is dense, so it absorbs little water for a limestone.
Colours
Kota comes mainly in two colours. Kota blue is a blue-green-grey, the colour most people picture. Kota brown is a warmer, earthy brown. Within each colour, shade varies from slab to slab, so order a single lot for one floor.
Finishes
Machine-finished Kota is smooth and matt and can be polished after laying for a soft sheen. Rough or natural Kota keeps the riven face and gives grip, which is what you want on driveways, ramps and wet areas.
Where it lasts, and where it does not
Kota lasts for decades on floors, staircases, balconies and parking areas. It is not a kitchen counter stone: lemon, tamarind and vinegar will dull its surface. Polished Kota outdoors becomes slippery when wet.
What decides its cost
The colour, the finish, the size of the pieces and the consistency of the lot all affect cost, as do thickness and how much is cut to fit your rooms. Akrruthi quotes after you have chosen the stone and shared your floor plan. No rates are given on this site.

Questions about kota stone
Is Kota stone good for flooring?
Yes. It is one of the hardest-wearing floors you can lay at its cost, and it stays cool. It suits utility areas, staircases and whole homes where a plain floor is wanted.
Does Kota stone need polishing?
It is usually supplied machine-finished and can be polished after laying for a smoother sheen. Indoors, a honed or polished finish is easy to clean; outdoors, choose a rough finish for grip.
What is the difference between Kota blue and Kota brown?
Colour only. Kota blue is a blue-green-grey; Kota brown is a warm brown. Both come from the same region and wear the same way.
