Where does onyx work, and where does it not?
Onyx is translucent and soft. With light behind it, its bands glow, which makes it the stone for backlit walls, bar fronts and feature panels. It scratches and etches easily, so it is unsuitable for floors, kitchen counters and anywhere that takes daily wear. Use it where it is seen, not walked on.

Questions about onyx
Why is onyx used with lights behind it?
Onyx lets light through. Lit from behind, its bands and clouds show as a warm glow that no other stone gives. Unlit, it reads as a strongly patterned stone.
Is onyx strong enough for a floor?
No. It is softer than marble and scratches with grit. Keep it for walls and panels.
How thick is onyx for backlighting?
Akrruthi supplies 18 mm slabs. Backlit panels are usually fixed in a frame with even LED lighting behind them; your lighting designer should plan the gap and diffusion.
