Stone for staircases
Which stone is right for a staircase?
For a staircase that is used all day, choose granite: it takes the wear on the edge of each step far better than marble. Choose marble if the stairs must match a marble floor, and ask for a honed finish or anti-slip grooves on the treads. Outdoor steps need a textured finish such as flamed, leather or natural.

Stone types for staircases, compared
| Stone type | Suits | With care | What to know |
|---|---|---|---|
| Italian marble | 15 of 19 | 4 | To match a marble floor. Honed treads are safer. |
| Imported marble | 27 of 57 | 30 | To match a floor. Step edges wear faster than granite. |
| Onyx | 0 of 9 | 0 | Not for stairs. |
| Travertine | 9 of 9 | 0 | Covered steps, filled and honed. |
| Granite | 37 of 45 | 8 | The hardest-wearing choice for treads and risers. |
| Natural stone | 20 of 20 | 0 | Outdoor steps in natural or rough finishes; Kota and Tandur for utility stairs. |

Mistakes to avoid
- Polished treads on outdoor or frequently wet steps.
- Soft stone on stairs that carry heavy traffic.
- Treads and risers from different lots.
Which finish to choose
- Honed or leather treads indoors; polished risers if you want shine.
- Flamed, rough or natural treads outdoors.
- Ask for anti-skid grooves near the edge of polished treads.
Questions about stone for staircases
Granite or marble for stairs?
Granite for wear and safety; marble when the stairs must continue a marble floor. Either way, avoid polished treads where they get wet.
Can sandstone be used for steps?
Outdoors, yes, in a natural or sandblasted finish. It is the usual choice for garden steps.
