Stone for flooring

Which stone should I choose for my floor?

For living and bedroom floors, choose marble: it is cool, smooth and shows its veining across a room. For busy areas, stairs and offices, choose granite, which barely wears. For utility areas, balconies and outdoor floors, choose Kota, Tandur or sandstone in a textured finish. Keep onyx off floors entirely.

Stones that suit flooring

Mistakes to avoid

  • Ordering slabs for one floor from more than one lot: shade and veining change between lots.
  • Polished stone at entrances and wet areas, where it becomes slippery.
  • Laying light marble without sealing it first.
  • Under-ordering: allow for cutting wastage and breakage. Use the quantity calculator.

Which finish to choose

  • Polished for living rooms and bedrooms, where shine shows the stone.
  • Honed for bathrooms, kitchens and homes with elders or children: matt, with more grip.
  • Leather, rough or natural finishes for outdoor floors, ramps and car porches.

Questions about stone for flooring

Is marble or granite better for flooring?

Marble for living and bedroom floors where you want veining and a cool, smooth feel. Granite where the floor takes heavy wear, such as stairs, offices and shops.

How much extra stone should I order for a floor?

Allow for cutting wastage and occasional breakage. The right allowance depends on room shape and slab size; the quantity calculator gives a starting figure and we confirm it from your floor plan.

Does a marble floor need polishing again?

Marble can be re-polished on site when it dulls. How often depends on traffic and care; sealing and door mats slow wear.
