Granite and Indian Marble

Granite for kitchens, staircases and floors

Why is granite the default for kitchens and stairs?

Granite is the hardest-wearing natural stone used in homes. It resists heat, knives and kitchen acids, which is why it is the usual choice for kitchen counters, staircases and busy floors. Akrruthi holds South Indian and North Indian granites, and imported granites and quartzites for islands and feature walls.

Good to know

Where granite works

  • Kitchen counters and islands
  • Staircases, thresholds and window sills
  • Floors in busy homes, offices and shops
  • Exteriors and car porches, in a flamed or leather finish

Where it does not

  • Polished granite on outdoor steps and ramps, which is slippery when wet
  • Very light granites by the cooker without sealing; oil can mark them

Questions about granite

Is granite better than marble for a kitchen counter?

Yes, for a kitchen that is cooked in every day. Granite resists heat, knives and acids. Marble etches when lemon or tamarind touches it.

Does granite need sealing?

Dark, dense granites need little or none. Lighter, more porous granites should be sealed on installation and then every year or two.

Which granite finish is safe outdoors?

Flamed or leather. Both give grip when wet. Keep polished granite for indoor counters and floors.
